What would you like your care team to do that they are not doing? Do you think you should be diagnosed, but they have not diagnosed you yet? Ask! "Can you explain the criteria for diagnosis and why I do not meet them yet?" Do you want them to run tests? Ask! "What tests do you recommend? Should I have ____ test? Why or why not?" Are you concerned about a specific symptom, but they seem to be ignoring it or downplaying it? Ask! "I am concerned about ____, but you do not seem concerned. Can you explain more about what you are seeing that tells you I am ok? When would it no longer be ok?" Think they should be offering a treatment? Ask! "What can be done to treat _____? Is it appropriate in my case? Why or why not? When would it be bad enough to treat?" Do not feel safe at home? Ask! "What symptoms should I watch for at home, and what should I do if I notice something? What might lead you to hospitalize me for closer monitoring?" Think it is time for delivery? Ask! "What are you watching for that will tell you it is time to deliver?" Are there guidelines your doctor does not seem to be following? Ask! "Can you explain why this guideline does not apply in my case?" If all else fails, have them put it in writing. "Patient is concerned about _____ and requests _____, but I will not do it at this time because...."
